Before Your Treatment
You will fill out a medical history form to help inform me about the different areas and issues in your body ( These areas are often linked to each other) as well as lifestyle and daily activities that can affect your body
During Your Treatment
A treatment will typically last between 30 minutes and 45mins.
This includes a physical assessment at the start of your treatment.
It is mainly done while the client is lying down but some treatment can be done sitting.
Preferably Bowen Therapy is done directly on the skin but can be provided through a layer of light clothing if you prefer. If you are a women can you please wear a bra that opens at the back.
Set sequences of Bowen moves will be made over relevant areas. This involves a series of specific gentle rolling moves across the fascia / soft tissue associated with your muscle groups, tendons, ligaments and nerves.
During the treatment the therapist may pause for periods of 2–3 minutes at a time. This allows time for your body to respond to the treatment and for the necessary changes to occur in your body - Such as effective fascial release and the adequate hydration of cells and tissues. This is part of the muscular healing process.
During your treatment most people will experience relaxation as well as therapeutic benefits.
Bowen Therapy can provide outcomes ranging from long-term rapid remission or permanent remission, to significant improvement in mobility, physiology, pain, stress and general wellbeing.
Many patients have also reported increased energy, improvement in the immune system, rebalancing of the body, improved circulation, lymphatic drainage and detoxification.
Post Your Treatment
Drink plenty of water to help keep your body and its tissues hydrated, This will help the treatment be more effective as it recovers.
Bowen can initiate beneficial changes in the body from the the treatment day and still be making changes up to 4 days later. You will be advised on any anticipated changes to expect that will indicate the success of the treatment, and you will be given post-treatment exercises if appropriate.
It is strongly advised that you do not have any other physical therapy or other forms of manipulation – such as massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture or kinesiology – for one week after the treatment. These things may undo the balance achieved through the Bowen treatment.
For the initial 24-48hrs Avoid excessive heat or cold to areas that have been treated. Stop using an electric blanket or hot water bottle. Have Warm not Hot Baths.
Avoid sitting for any longer than 30 minutes on the day of your visit without moving around. Lying down is alright. Also remember to try not to sit with crossed legs - twisting the hips.
If you had jaw work done as part of your treatment, do not bite into apples, raw carrots or anything similar and try to avoid yawning, just for the treatment day. Keep jaw as small as you can (do not open your mouth widely). Definitely no chewing gum.
Have patience. The treatment can take a couple of days to take effect. In some instances symptoms may worsen for 24-48 hours as the body readjust itself after a Bowen Treatment. You may also feel very tired post your treatment with a lot of people reporting very good night sleep after their treatment.
Reactions that may be experienced include hot and cold flushes, emotional releases, headaches and body aches. These reactions are a positive sign that the healing process is working.
